Voodoo Halloween Night
Voodoo takes over Electrowerkz at Halloween with a week's worth of hard preparation, dedicated to decorating the venue which becomes transformed into the most thrilling Halloween event of the season, 3 floors covered in wall-to-wall decoration and the Voodoo multitudes respond in kind with the best costumes you will see anywhere in London.
So we asked Ryan, Voodoo Manager, and Larry, the Founder, some questions…
Ryan, on a scale of one to infinity describe how glad you are to be back?
Ryan - Beyond the limits of what the mind could even comprehend as a stopping point of happiness radiating through me right now.
Larry, how was Voodoo born?
Larry - Voodoo arose from the ashes of the Astoria, after the demolition of Tottenham Court Road and the devastating loss of several key venues. It was a very gruesome time as we seemed to be thrown into the dark ages of rock music for all of us dirty grungers. Voodoo was and has been a glimmer of hope as we picked up the standard and charged forward with the flag and continued on.
Ryan, what have you been doing with Voodoo during lockdown?
Ryan - Well we were one of the initial clubs to venture into the world of online streaming during the first lockdown, from that we then launched London's first socially distanced table service alt events, but unfortunately the increasing concern in regards to the pandemic meant we had to cut that short, and since then we have bided our time patiently, working away in the dark until we could be reborn!
Larry, why did you pick Electrowerkz as the Voodoo venue?
Larry - I have always been drawn to Electrowerkz and it was one of the first venues I went to when I first moved to London in 1996. I fell in love with the venue and the atmosphere around it so it was a logical choice for me to approach them about moving my style of party over to Electowerkz. After a meeting with the legendary Mak, he instantly and totally identified with what I wanted to achieve. Voodoo runs parallel to everything Electrowrekz stands for, we have a very similar spirit in many ways. Mak was like my holy Goth father to everything and over the years he has inspired Voodoo to mutate and grow with the times. Grounded and respecting its roots while embracing the future.
Voodoo is a progression and evolution of my belief and ethos from 20yrs of being involved in Londons alternative club nights. Giving people like myself a platform to be themselves, and express themselves in a safe environment and have a fucking great time with their friends.

What bands got you through Covid?
Ryan - Jeez, just chuck a dart at any band or musician ever, they’ve all played a part in these crazy past 15 months to see me through.
Larry - I’m an 80s and 90s kind of a guy, who grew up listening to 50s/60s/70s music. So loads of old jams from long ago.

What was your favourite Voodoo Hoo-doo moment?
Larry - Every Voodoo is special, just love seeing everyone going wild and express themselves freely and create the unique atmosphere with their energy and presence... although the Halloween when Skindred played Voodoo was quite mind-blowing!
Ryan, can you tell us what will be new at Voodoo, you know, just between us and you if it’s not a surprise?
Ryan - That would ruin the surprise, lips are sealed.
What new tunes from new or old bands can we expect on your first night back?
Ryan - Definitely expect the likes of fresh releases from Architects, Spiritbox, Svalbard, Gojira, While She Sleeps, just a whole plethora of amazing sounding new shit combined with the monstrously huge tracks of the past.
Larry - Somehow mix 3 decades of rock music, the very latest, old classics and everything in between into the time that we have, we never really plan DJ sets they all just happen in the moment and we are not afraid to experiment a little.

And lastly, what is the greatest, most incredible, awesome, stunning, wonderful, unbelievably brilliant venue on the planet?
Ryan - My heart, my soul, my essence, my blood, my being, my soul will always be a part of the greatest venue in the world, Electrowerkz.
Larry - Without question Electrowerkz.

As a Voodoo night goes into its final few hours heading for the dawn, Larry takes over the DJ booth on the rock floor, and he is in his absolute element. Focused and absorbed in the rock anthems and tunes he is kicking out, a payback moment for all the hard work in creating the night. And if you watch him closely, his intense concentration and dedication makes you wonder if he didn't write every note, play every instrument, and kick every bass drum from every song he plays, such is his dedication to his club night and the music. Mate you smashed it.
Larry, give us some finale words from Voodoo?
por todas las almas perdidas
despierta a los muertos
